I have flown quite a bit and have learned by trial and error what I should pack for a flight. I want to share my travel experiences and what works for me with my carry-on. What you pack for your carry-on is based on if you are checking a bag or not. This blog is focused on me checking a bag for an international flight, so most of my toiletries went into my checked bag. Whether I’m flying international or not, my carry on is pretty similar.
What To Pack In Your Carry On For An International Flight
Plan ahead by packing these items in your carry-on luggage for happier travels.
What Bag I Use
The travel bag that I am currently using is super cool! It’s from Stella & Dot, the Lady Boss Travel Bag, designed to slide over a suitcase handle for effortless travel. It unzips to a full garment bag – including a hook for hangers. It has additional compartments to keep shoes separate from clothing. This bag is for sure an investment piece, but I don’t think you will be disappointed! This bag is awesome!
Carry-on Must-Haves
Travel Documents
The most important items, in my opinion, are your travel documents. Make sure you have a special spot for these. This would include your passport, travel insurance, medical documents, valuables, and travel itinerary. It’s always wise to bring physical copies of your passport and any other travel documents in case of loss or theft.
Wellness Kit
I have a “wellness kit” that I travel with, which includes;
- Lysol/OnGuard Spray
- Hand Sanitizer
- Lotion
- Ibuprofen
- Chapstick/Lip Balm
- Wet Ones -Antibacterial wipes
- Band-Aid Bandages
- Airborne/Emergen-C
- Hair tie
- Oil Absorbing Sheets
- Tissue
- Make-up Wipes
- Peppermint Oil (upset tummy)
- Gum/Floss
- Hydrating Mist –Stone Crop Hydrating Mist, I am obsessed with this! I take it everywhere. I put this in a travel size container so I can put it in my carry-on.
I keep these items in a clear, reusable plastic bag. It’s much easier to find what you’re looking for and not spend 10 minutes digging in your bag!! Also, you want to follow the TSA 3-1-1 travel rule.
TSA’s 3-1-1 Liquids Tavel Rule
If you’re not familiar with this rule, TSA’s 3-1-1 liquids rule refers to how many liquids you can bring in your carry-on bags: Each liquid must be in a 3.4-ounce or less container, all containers must be placed inside one clear quart-sized plastic bag, and each passenger is only allowed one plastic bag.
Travel Essentials
Travel essentials like headphones, snacks, and a travel pillow will come in handy as well. Don’t forget your water bottle!!
Entertainment
- Phone
- Book/Notebook/Magazine
- Laptop/Ipad
- Music/noise-canceling headphones
- Chargers for all electronics (Remember, don’t forget your converter/adapter kit for international travel.)
Snacks
- Trail mix
- Protein Bar
- Candy – I always like to travel with a little sweet.
- Water/Reusable water bottle
Comfort
- Neck Pillow
- Blanket Scarf
- Lumbar Pillow
- Comfy Shoes
- Compression Socks
- Slip Sleep Mask – This is the best mask ever!! BTW I also have the Slip Pillow Case. It is a dream!
Just in case your checked bag happens to get misplaced, pack a few small items that you might need until reunited with your luggage. Especially all of your medications! You do not want to be left without these. If you can’t pack the whole bottle then just pack enough to get you through a few days if need be.
What to Wear
Comfort, of course, is vital when thinking about your travel outfit. My outfits will change depending on my destination; for longer fights, I want to be as comfortable as possible. Jogger pants and a jacket are usually my go-to. Layering is essential, the plane can get a bit chilly, and I hate being cold! Make sure you have your blanket scarf on hand to cover up if it gets too cold. Comfortable shoes are a must!
I will also pack my sunglasses on my carry-on, I don’t care if I’m headed to the sun or not!
