Books you need to bring to the beach!
Summer is right around the corner and it’s time to catch up on some reading. I love to read but sometimes feel that life gets so busy and I just can’t find the time. And then summer rolls around and I feel like time slows down just a bit. It’s the lazy days of summer and time to read some books.
My Summer Book Reads 2020
Just a couple of tips I have on reading
Get in the habit of reading every night before bed
This helps me fall asleep pretty fast! LOL I usually only get in a few chapters before my eyes start to get heavy. Purchase actual books for nighttime reading. Then you’re not looking at that blue screen right before you fall asleep.
Turn off your phone!
There is no need for extra distractions. Also it’s nice to step away from the phone for a bit and get away from social media and outside distractions.
Audio Books
Great for commuting to work, working out, cleaning, and traveling. Lately, I have really been loving the audio books. I’m not in my car too much nowadays so I’ve been turning on my audio book from my cell phone. I put it in my back pocket and go about my business around the house. It really works great.
Join a book club!
Book clubs are such a great idea. My book club meets once a month and everyone takes a turn picking their favorite book and the restaurant where we will meet. It’s a great way to get some socializing in. And to read books that maybe you would never think to pick for yourself.
“Life is too short to read a bad book, and if you’re not enjoying a book, there are so many others to choose,” Suzanne Skyvara, vice president of editorial and marketing at Goodreads, told us. “If you’re struggling to read right now, give yourself a break. Read something lighter or read something you’ve already read before and you know you really enjoy. Just reading books can be such a great source of comfort and escapism in today’s world.”

The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband and the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive.
Becoming by Michelle Obama
In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address.
Educated by Tara Westover
An unforgettable memoir about a young girl who kept out of school, leaves her survivalist family, and goes on to earn a Ph.D. from Cambridge University.
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent…
Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
A murder…A tragic accident…Or just parents behaving badly? What’s indisputable is that someone is dead.
Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the little lies that can turn lethal.
Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family’s Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story—and survive this homecoming.
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty
Imagine your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret—something with the potential to destroy not only the life you built together, but the lives of others as well. And then imagine that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive…
9 Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty
Nine people gather at a remote health resort. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to get a reboot on life, some are here for reasons they can’t even admit to themselves. Amidst all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these ten days might involve some real work. But none of them could imagine just how challenging the next ten days are going to be.
The Summer House by Lauren Denton
Lily Bishop wakes up one morning to find a good-bye note and divorce papers from her husband on the kitchen counter. Having moved to Alabama for his job only weeks before, Lily is devastated, but a flyer at the grocery store for a hair stylist position in a local retirement community provides a refuge while she contemplates her next steps.
Chasing Vines by Beth Moore
In Chasing Vines, Beth shows us from Scripture how all of life’s concerns—the delights and the trials—matter to God. He uses all of it to help us flourish and be fruitful. Looking through the lens of Christ’s transforming teaching in John 15, Beth gives us a panoramic view of biblical teachings on the Vine, vineyards, vine-dressing, and fruitfulness. Along the way you’ll discover why fruitfulness is so important to God—and how He can use anything that happens to us for His glory and our flourishing. Nothing is for nothing.
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned—from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules.
A Year in Flowers by Erin Benzakein
Well, there you have it. Here is my summer book list. I have read most of these. And this is why I am recommending them. I still have a couple to read over the summer. And if I read any others that I love, I will add to this list.
I hope you have an enjoyable and relaxing summer. I think we all need it right about now. Please let me know what your summer reads will be this summer. I would love to hear about them!
Cheers to hot summer days and warm lazy nights! XOXO Stephanie
