Decorating the Perfect Christmas Tree
Everyone wants to have the perfect Christmas tree, and everyone has their own idea of what a perfect Christmas tree should look like. Do you cut down a real tree, or do you run to Hobby Lobby and get the perfectly shaped faux tree? There is no right or wrong way, it’s what you are feeling in your festive heart.
Decorating the perfect Christmas tree is sometimes easier said than done. Come up with a theme and a color before you start decorating. This can really help with your planning and spending your precious money.
Having a Christmas Tree Theme
Every year I like to switch up my tree just a bit, but not so much as to cost me a ton of money. For example, sometimes I will do red and gold, and the next year I will do red and silver. Or do a mixture of red, gold, and silver!
I usually make a major change about every 4 or 5 years. For a few years, I did a beautiful blue and turquoise color. Then I switched to pinks. The great thing is I am somewhat of a “hoarder” and keep most of my past decorations, so I have options each Christmas on what my theme will be for that year!!!
Need some inspiration for a new themed Christmas tree? Go to your local nursery. I love to go to my local nursery, Molbak’s Garden & Home. It’s one of my absolute faves. Also, I love Skagit Valley Nursery, it’s a perfect place for Christmas inspiration! Check out some websites such as Balsman Hill, Frontgate, or King of Christmas. Once you have your theme chosen, it’s time to start with lights, ornaments, and filler pieces.
Lighting is Important
Do you want a bright white, a warm, soft white, or do you want tons of colored lights! Then there is always the solid red. I have always been in favor of the warm, soft white lights.
If you have to string your lights, it’s best to start at the base of the trunk and work your way up, wrapping lights around every major branch until you get to the top of the tree.
Ball Ornaments
Ball ornaments are a staple for the perfect tree. There are all different types of ball ornaments to choose from. Some are matte, some are shiny, and some have glitter. They used to only be available in very fragile glass, but now they come in indestructible plastic, or shatterproof, that still looks great, perfect for families with small children or animals who won’t stay out of the tree.
You want to choose the right hanging decorations, ribbons, or florals for your theme. Pick different shapes, sizes, and finishes to add some dimension to your tree. At times I have added stuffed animals to my décor or some charming little wooden signs.
Adding Tree Fillers
I love to add decorated branches, twigs, or berries to my trees. Also, some beautiful florals are always a must. There are so many great florals you can find at your local craft store to add the perfect touch to your tree and add a magical elegance. Michael’s has some adorable and inexpensive picks you can add to your tree as well.
Don’t forget the Ribbon!
Adding ribbon is also a great option for your Christmas tree. Just like the florals, there are so many beautiful ribbons to choose from to make your tree unique and sparkle. Using ribbon is a great way to add filler if you don’t have a lot of ornaments. It’s a perfect way to make your tree look full and consistent.
If you do want ribbon in your tree, I would recommend starting with the ribbon when you first begin decorating your tree. It’s easier to guide the ribbon through the branches before you add ornaments.
Tree Topper for the Win
A tree-topper is the “icing on the cake” and a great way to complete your tree. This is the perfect way to make a big statement with your tree. It can be as easy as a beautiful sparkling star, an angel, or a big bow. Also, you could add some florals or twigs coming out of the top. Use your imagination and have fun with it!
Above all, make sure you enjoy decorating your tree with loved ones and making beautiful memories. This is a great time to gather together and enjoy each other’s company.
